Why Rest Feels So Difficult in Summer (and How to Return to Yourself)

There is something we rarely talk about when summer arrives.
We celebrate longer days, lighter evenings and calendars filled with plans. Social media encourages us to make the most of every moment, to travel, gather, achieve and experience more. Summer is often portrayed as the season of abundance.
Yet for many women, it can feel surprisingly exhausting.
Instead of feeling lighter, we find ourselves carrying more. More expectations. More responsibilities. More pressure to keep up. Holidays need organising, children are home from school, routines shift and quiet moments become harder to find.
Somewhere amongst the busyness, we lose sight of ourselves.
At Holistic Heritage, I believe that rest is not something we have to earn. It is something we are designed to need.
Rest is a Practice, Not a Reward
Many of us have been taught to see rest as the prize at the end of productivity. Once everything is finished, then we can stop.
But life is rarely "finished."
There will always be another email, another load of washing, another responsibility waiting for us tomorrow.
When we postpone rest until everything else is complete, we often find ourselves running on empty.
Choosing to pause is not giving up. It is an act of care. It allows the body to soften, the mind to settle and the nervous system to find balance again.
Looking to Nature
Nature never rushes.
A tree doesn't bloom all year. The tide doesn't stay high forever. Even the longest summer day gently fades into evening.
The natural world reminds us that life moves in rhythms, not constant productivity.
Perhaps we were never meant to live differently.
Even in summer—a season often associated with energy—we still need moments of stillness.
A quiet walk beneath the trees.
Five minutes with a cup of herbal tea.
Bare feet on the grass.
Watching the sun set without reaching for your phone.
These small moments are not insignificant. They are gentle reminders that you belong to the same rhythms as the natural world.
A Simple Summer Ritual
If today feels overwhelming, you don't need to change everything.
Instead, try this:
Step outside for ten minutes.
Take three slow, intentional breaths.
Notice five things you can see, four you can hear and three you can feel.
Place one hand over your heart and one over your abdomen.
Ask yourself gently, What do I need today?
You may not have all the answers.
But creating space to listen is often where healing begins.
Returning to Yourself
Returning to yourself isn't about escaping your life.
It's about remembering that your wellbeing matters within it.
Whether through quiet moments in nature, intentional rituals or simply allowing yourself permission to slow down, every small act of care is a step back towards yourself.
This is the heart of Holistic Heritage.
Creating spaces where women can pause, reconnect and remember that rest is not a luxury—it is part of living well.
As summer continues, my invitation to you is simple:
You don't have to fill every moment.
You don't have to keep proving your worth through how much you do.
Sometimes the most meaningful thing we can do is pause, breathe and come home to ourselves.
